General Dial up questions

Internet Terminology

What is Dial up?

Dial up allows you to connect to the Internet by dialling in to Netspace over a standard telephone line using a regular modem.

Even with today's proliferation of broadband options, many people still find Dial up an easy and convenient way to access the Internet – especially as most new computers are now provided with a built-in modem.

At a speed of 56k, Dial up is slower than broadband but Netspace customers can take advantage of Netspace Accelerator to increase the speed of their Dial up connection by up to 5 times.

To connect to Netspace Dial up, simply choose from one of our great residential or business Dial up plans.

It's important to ensure the number you are dialling is a local call, otherwise you may end up paying national or STD call rates.

What sort of modem do I need?

You can use any ACA approved Dial up modem to connect.

Most newer computers are now provided with a built-in Dial up modem, but if you are going to purchase a dial up modem for your computer, we recommend buying an external modem as they are often more reliable.

What is the V92 protocol? Can I use it?

V92 is a protocol which allows for the taking of calls while connected to the Internet.

Unfortunately, V92 is not widely available in Australia and it is unlikely that you can use it.

If you have a V92 modem, you can still use it to connect to Netspace using the standard V90 protocol.
