Film actor and director Charlie Caplin was born in London, going to Hollywood in 1914. His bowler hat, out-turned feet, moustache and walking stick became his hallmark - his art was essentially suited to silent movies. When sound arrived he experimented with City Lights (1931), Modern Times (1936), The Great Dictator (1940), and Limelight (1952).He was awarded an Oscar in 1972 and knighted in 1975.

Charlie Chaplin's first film since City Lights opened at the Rivoli Theater New York on 5 february 1936. He spent a year preparing the script and 11 months shooting the film. In Modern Times the Tramp finds himself one of the millions trying to cope in a modern world dominated by machines.

The Circus premiered in New York on 6 january 1928. This film occupied Chaplin for over 2 years, production on the nearly-completed film was suspended in December 1926 and not resumed until october 1927. 200 takes in a cage with real lions, colossal quantities of discarded film - the final 6500 feet version edited down from 211,000 feet. This was to be his last silent movie - sound taking over with his next production City Lights

This movie is his damning verdict on fascism and his first dialogue film. Filming commenced with a completed script, originally running to 300 pages. Chaplin cast himself in the dual role of Adenoid Hynkel the ranting dictator of Tomania, and the downtrodden little Jewish barber.
The movie appeared on 15 october 1940 in New York
