Founded in 1581 by Francis 1 de Medici with plans of Cosimo 1 to house the family's art collections Later Ferdinand 1 transferred various sculptures from the Medici Villa in Rome, and further works of art were added with the patronage of Cosimo 11 and Peter Leopold of Lorraine.
