State Library
was built in 1853 by Josph Reed and is the oldest state library in Australia. The dome was added in 1911. It is being restored at present.

National Gallery of Victoria

Victorian Arts Centre
Built in 1981 and part of the Victorian Arts Centre the Melbourne Concert Hall was designed by Roy Grounds and is used primarily for orchestral concerts. 3/4 of the building is below ground level!
Built in 1984 The State Theatre is also part of the Victorian Arts Centre, seats 2000 and includes the Playhouse with 850 seats and the Studio with 450. Its spire is 162 metres.
Performing Arts Museum is housed in the Victorian Arts Centre too.

Flinders Street Station
designed by JW Fawcell & HPC Ashworth Australia's first steam train left here in 1854. The Building was completed in 1910 and revamped in the 1990's. Each week more than 10,300 passenger-carrying train operate to and from here - on an average weekday more than 110,000 people use its 10 platforms and Platform 1 at 708 metres is the world's fourth longest railway platform! The old fashioned clock faces over the entrance still display the next scheduled departures of the Alamein, Lilydale and Sandringham lines in roman numerals. -Did you know there is a Ballroom here?


The State Library
designed by Joseph Reed and built in 1856, its dome was added in 1911.

Building 8 on Swanston St is an exciting building which houses the Student Union, Lecture rooms and Offices
Storey Hall designed by Ashton Raggatt McDougall and built in 1996 the classical 1887 exterior now has an exciting innovative interior


Melbourne Town Hall

designed by Joseph Reed and built in 1879 for the International Exhibition of 1880 by David Mitchell who was the father of Dame Nellie Melba. It was used for the Centennial Exhibition of 1888 and the Opening of the First Federal Parliament

Como House
The land was acquire by E E Williams in 1846 and he built the first part of the present house with the gardens running down to the river. It is said he was reminded of Lake Como in Italy and named his house Como. In 1854 John Brown added the veranda which was imported from Scotland. The Armytage family who were owners from 1864-1959 built the ballroom.


Shrine of Rememberance
designed by Hudson and Wardrop and built in 1934 as a memorial to Victorians who gave their lives in World War 1. A dawn ceremony is held here on Anzac Day, 25 April each year


La Trobe's Cottage
was brought to Melbourne in 1839 by Superintendent Charles Joseph La Trobe as a small prefabricated cottage.

Government House


Sydney Myer Music Bowl
on Kings Domain on the SW corner of the Royal Botanic Gardens it was designed by Barry Patten, and opened by Prime Minister Robert Menzies on February 12 1959. Built with money from the Sidney Myer Charity Trust, it underwent a $20 million redevelopment by Gregory Burgess in 2000. As a community resourse it is used for concerts, and in the winter ice-skating. The original architects Yuncken Freeman, Griffiths and Simpson won a design competition for it - a daring concept similar to a tent strung on wire cables.
