If you would like to see learn something about the New Norfolk part of the Catholic Parish @ Central Tasmania. click here and you can see what the Parish is about.

I am a Tasmanian, the eldest of seven children born in 1951. Except for 4 years living in Victoria in the early 1960's and 7 years spent at Corpus Christi College, the Seminary for Victorian and Tasmanian Candidates for the priesthood, I have lived and worked in Tasmania.

I was ordained a Priest in August 1975 and have worked in a number of the Parishes around our wonderful island State. I have just completed 7 years in New Norfolk after being appointed here in September 1995 after having been Parish Priest of Glenorchy, Tasmania, for the previous 7 years.

Since January 1976 I have worked as an Assistant Priest in Launceston, Bellerive, the Cathedral Parish, Sandy Bay/Taroona. My time at Taroona was a particularly enjoyable part of my early years of priesthood as I worked with a great Parish Priest, Fr Adrian Doyle, now the Archbishop of Hobart.

I then received my first appointment as a Parish Priest of Deloraine - however it was only for 9 weeks and 1 day. Due to the illness of two priests, and following the death of Archbishop Sir Guilford Young on March 16th 1988, I was appointed to the Church of Apostles in Launceston where I was to work with Fr Mark Freeman for 12 months.

Tree months after the death of Dean Ted Lloyd, the Administrator of the Church of the Apostles, I was appointed as Parish Priest of Glenorchy where I worked with two priests during my 7 years as Parish Priest.

Some of my other activities have included serving as a Reserve Chaplain in the Royal Australian Navy since October 1983. During that time I have served aboard HMAS Stalwart (now decommissioned); HMAS Sydney - you can read about that journey at Navy Trip 2000.

I was fortunate to have another time at sea with the RAN aboard HMAS Tobruk during May-June 2002 and you can read about that trip by going to Navy Trip 2002.

I have also worked as an Industrial Chaplain (part-time) with the Tasmania Police Service, Tasmania Fire Service and CSR Humes in Hobart. Each of these activities have broadened my understanding of life and the situations and circumstances people regularly find themselves involved with.

During 2001 I was fortunate to have been able to travel to Ireland to attend a Pastoral Renewal Program at Marianella, a Redemptorist Monastery in Rathgar, Dublin. The details of what happened there can be found at the Tour of Ireland or you can read about the Marianella Program by following this link.

I've also been fortunate to have been asked to represent, firstly, the late Archbishop Young, then Archbishop D'Arcy and now Archbishop Doyle as an official Diocesan representative on the Tasmanian Council of Churches. This involvement has given me the opportunity to make a wide range of friends outside the normal sphere of my 'church' links. Some of these links can be found by going to the next page. As part of this work I have been able to work with the staff of the National Council of Churches in Australia as a member of the Christian World Services Commission - a position I was appointed too after the last National Forum in 1998. I was re-appointed at the July 2001 National forum for a further 3 years as a member of the Commission. The work of the CWS and the NCCA can be followed from this link.
